Medication Standards
Staff members are responsible for supervision of self- administered medications, when participants require assistance.
Only the participant's pharmacist can alter labels and transfer medication from one storage container to another.
Prescription medications that are not taken with the person upon discharge shall be destroyed by the center operator in the presence of other staff member. Record of the destroyed medications are kept in file for at least three years.
Medications shall centrally be stored when:
The medication requires refrigeration.
Medication is determined and documented by the physician to be hazardous if kept in the personal possession of the person for whom it was prescribed.
Because of physical arrangement and the conditions or habits of other persons in the center, the medication are determined by the operator and physician to be a safety hazard of others.
Medications will be kept in a locked cabinet or container, and refrigerated if required; all medications will only be accessible to authorized staff responsible for the distribution of medicine; the area in which medication are stored will be free from dampness and abnormal temperature. Each container of medication shall be properly labeled according to state law and shall include the name of the person for whom it is prescribed, the name of the drug, and the instructions for use.
